“Shit Year” – Cannes reviews

May 16th, 2010 @ 12:17 pm › 0 comments

A few reviews of “Shit Year” have been posted online. Here’s a collection of quotes regarding Luke’s character Harvey and links to read the reviews in full:

Screen Daily’s Howard Feinstein:

[...] When Archer shoots Harvey, whether in extreme close-up or, with the young man clad only in tight swimming trucks, in long shot, the director reveals a compulsion as intense as [Colleen's]. More ethereal than earthy, Harvey comes across like one of Warhol’s androgynous young men. [...]

The Hollywood Reporter’s Ray Bennett:

[...] She also toys with a pretty boy (Luke Grimes) who looks a bit like the young Elvis but when invited to speak says either “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure.” [...]

Variety’s Jay Weissber:

[...] What she has, besides her former career, is the memory of a recent affair with 22-year-old actor Harvey (model-pretty Luke Grimes) and a cottage in the woods. Neither her obsession with Harvey nor her newfound isolation help fill the hole left by portraying other people her entire life. [...]

Harvey is largely decorative, part real and part Colleen’s fantasy creation of a young lover, and as such he’s underdeveloped, though Grimes is able to carve out a presence. [...]

Indie Wire’s Eric Kohn:

[...] Shot on grainy 16mm, the black-and-white story drifts around through several disconnected parts, all of which put Barkin front and center. While she constantly displays a rawness and depth to the character, the big picture never comes together. [...]

Luke unfortunately didn’t attend the Industry in Focus: “Shit Year” panel today at noon as scheduled. But, to cheer us up, a few portraits taken at Palais Stephanie during the 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival have been released. Six high quality photos have been added, hopefully more will be released.

I could only locate these 4 photos, apparently there was no outside photocall or red carpet event before the premiere.

One video from the presentation was uploaded to ION Cinema’s Vimeo account. Click the link to watch it.
